Day 2 we played again; this time we wrote out the equation on our white boards. Now we start connecting our actions and words into the more abstract idea of equations.
Writing equations is abstract for us 6 and 7 year olds! As I visited groups, I saw this confusion: using the + sign instead of the - subtraction sign like 5+2=3. Prior to this activity we had played a game from our Investigation math series and then did a worksheet. This was common amongst the class: 4-1=5...lots of desire to add it all up for any equation.
Play more. Talk about it more. Then work on writing it more! We will work on this all year!
The above boy told me--look, when the door is open, the ball will roll down and knock this.
The girl told me when her door opens, you can jump in.
I asked her (thinking this was some kind of defense strategy), what is this a trap or something?
She said no, it's a ball pit.
