Here’s a great math game you can play at home. This is called the hand game. Maybe you have some rocks or pennies or legos to use as counters. We worked with target #5. We put some in one hand and some in another. Bring it together and say 3 and 2 makes 5. 4 and 1 is 5. What about 1 and 4--that’s an inverse. [An inverse is the same numbers switched around, still making the sum of 5--strategy and challenge.] After playing the game, we wrote it into equations. The hands-on playing helps to cement the understanding, then transferring into writing the equation and understanding the symbols of + and = signs.
