Our first full week of first grade! We got to join many spectators of the solar eclipse. The kids were in awe of seeing the moon cover the sun. We had some clouds come in and out, but we definitely saw the eclipse. How awe-inspiring.
Welcome to Grade 1. Ask your child why we love Taylor Swifts' "Welcome to New York" Pets version. We used this song to play Mix and Mingle. We can to dance to the tune and then practice these sentences with various partners.
3 Billy Goats Gruff Build a Better Bridge. We read the classic fairy tale of 3 Billy Goats Gruff. We added a contemporary educational spin on it--STEM and Growth Mindset. Students are to design a better bridge after the bridge collapses. All the while, help the troll work through his negative attitude that he "can't" or it's "too hard." Table groups worked in teams with a tub full of supplies to "build a better bridge." Afterwards we debriefed about how we built the bridge and how we had a positive Growth Mindset attitude.
Welcome back to school! Hello to all my new 1st grade friends. Lots of smiles and shiney faces to greet the teacher in our new line.
Are we ready to learn? Here is our ready-set-learner image. Teacher will call out and students chant back doing the appropriate action. We are learning that everything we do, be it work or how we sit, is all about our learning.
We are learning some of the important routines to make it a successful year. Here’s a song we will know very well...the 100 song.
When we hear it on our smartboard, we know this means to stop what we’re doing, clean up, and see you on the floor.
We started with many getting-to-know you activities. We put our names in alphabetical order. We found a lot of ties between the letters, but we were quick to go to the next letter. Listen to us sing the alphabet song to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”
We will continue next week with learning more about our friends. Afterall, we will be fellow scholars for the next 180 days!!!
This is the eve before the first day of 1st grade--so excited!!! I can't wait to meet our new little friends and welcome the firsties to our new class. I wonder what are the things and ways that make you so special. I wonder if you'll see your old friends. I wonder which new friends you will make. I wonder if you'll like your new teacher and your teacher will like you (I say that's a 100% yes!). I wonder what are the cool ways we can learn together. I wonder how wonderful of a year we will have! I wonder if I can get a good night's sleep...so excited!!!
