Deserts are places with less than 10 inches of rainfall (that includes the arctic!). One of America’s biggest desert close to us in the Sonoran Desert. We learned about a tall spiky giant--the saguaro cactus. It can grow for 150 years. It takes about 35 years for a flower to bloom. The cactus serves as a food and shelter for many animals. One of the animals is the Gila woodpecker. This medium size bird pecks a hole in the cactus to make a home. Then when it no longer needs a home, an elf owl can take it over. Here we are doing the beautiful colors of the desertscape.
