Do you get that excited feeling of opening your package. In it, is an item that would better your life? That’s the feeling we had when I opened an Amazon package in front of the class. It was a novelty thumb. Yes, a plastic toy thumb. You must be asking what does it have to do with 1st grade learning??? It's all about the /th/ word chunk. It's my favorite word chunk to introduce to firsites, because most likely they have encountered it already in many of the words they've learned since kindergarten.
Friday is a somewhat “free choice” among the two STEM tubs we worked in the week. We are also using the day to take time to really discuss our creations through show-and-tell. Look at this group add on as many things as they could on their building. We talked about the support beams helped hold the items. Look at our stringed letters. This week, we learned that making the letters in their lower cases got us further down to the alphabet (letter t). We had been working the letters as capital letters. If you can imagine how many strokes it takes to do a capital A (3 strokes); compared to the lower case a (which was one fell swoop).
We love word wall words. We practice them everyday! This week we are spelling the high frequency words through clothes pins. It’s a bonus with fine motor skills using our fingers to pinch, too
